What Happens If It Rains? My Weather Backup Plan for Every Session
One of the most common questions I get before a session is:
"What happens if the weather doesn't cooperate?"
Living and photographing in the Charleston area means we get our fair share of unpredictable weather. One minute it's sunny, and the next minute a summer thunderstorm rolls through. The good news? Weather is something I think about long before your session day arrives.
My goal is to make your experience as stress-free as possible, and that includes having a plan for less-than-perfect forecasts.
I Start Watching the Forecast Well Before Your Session
As your session approaches, I'm already keeping an eye on the weather. While weather apps can give us a general idea several days in advance, I don't make any decisions based on forecasts that are still changing.
Charleston weather is famous for shifting quickly. I've seen forecasts call for rain all day only for the skies to clear by evening. I've also seen the opposite happen.
Because of that, I typically wait until we're much closer to your session before making any changes.
Not Every Forecast Means We Need to Reschedule
A little cloud cover is actually one of my favorite things as a photographer.
Clouds create soft, even light that is incredibly flattering and beautiful in photographs. Some of my favorite galleries have been captured on overcast evenings.
Even forecasts showing a small chance of rain don't automatically mean we need to move your session. Often, scattered showers pass quickly and leave us with gorgeous skies afterward.
The situations that typically lead to rescheduling are:
Steady rain expected during the session
Thunderstorms
High winds
Conditions that would make the session uncomfortable or unsafe
Heavy rain that would prevent us from enjoying our planned location
I Make the Final Call So You Don't Have To
One thing I never want is for my clients to spend the entire week refreshing weather apps and stressing about what might happen.
That's my job.
If the forecast is looking questionable, I'll stay in communication with you and monitor conditions closely. If I feel rescheduling will give us a significantly better experience and better images, I'll reach out with options.
You never have to worry about being the one to make that decision.
I Build Flexibility Into My Calendar
Because weather is part of life as an outdoor photographer, I intentionally leave room in my schedule throughout the year for weather-related adjustments. In most cases, I will confirm a rain date at the time of your booking that we will use as our back-up in case weather on the original session date doesn’t cooperate.
My goal is always to get your session completed as quickly as possible while still giving you the beautiful experience and images you booked me for.
Sometimes Waiting Pays Off
There have been many evenings when radar looked questionable all afternoon, but we waited it out and ended up with the most incredible skies.
Some of the most beautiful sunsets happen after rain moves through.
That's why experience matters. Over the years, I've learned when to trust the forecast, when to be cautious, and when it's worth being patient.
Your Only Job: Show Up Ready to Enjoy Your Family
Whether the sky is bright blue, softly overcast, or clearing after a passing shower, my focus remains the same: creating genuine, joyful images of the people you love most.
I'll handle the weather watching, the backup plans, and the decision-making.
You focus on loving on your family, making memories together, and trusting that I've got the rest covered.
Because at the end of the day, my goal isn't just beautiful photographs—it's giving you a relaxed, enjoyable experience from start to finish.
