How to Choose the Perfect Location for Your Photo Session

One of the biggest decisions you'll make when planning your photo session isn't what to wear.

It's where to go.

And if you're feeling overwhelmed by that decision, you're definitely not alone.

Most clients fall into one of three categories:

  • You can't think of a single location.

  • You have twenty locations in mind and can't narrow them down.

  • You have no idea what actually looks good in photos.

Trust me—I get it.

The Charleston area is full of beautiful beaches, parks, oak-lined pathways, marsh views, downtown streets, gardens, and hidden gems. With so many incredible options, choosing just one can feel impossible.

The good news? You don't have to figure it out on your own.

One of my favorite parts of the planning process is helping clients find a location that matches their vision, personality, and the overall feel they want their photos to have.

Here are a few things I encourage clients to think about when choosing the perfect location for their session.

First, Think About the Feeling You Want Your Photos to Have

Before we ever talk about specific locations, I like to ask a simple question:

"How do you want your photos to feel?"

The answer often points us toward the perfect backdrop.

Light and Airy

If you're drawn to bright, clean, timeless images, open beaches, grassy fields, and locations with plenty of natural light are often wonderful choices.

These locations create a soft, relaxed feel that keeps the focus on your family and connections.

Coastal Charleston

Want your photos to immediately feel like Charleston?

Beaches, marshes, coastal trails, and waterfront locations offer beautiful Lowcountry scenery and a timeless coastal vibe.

Romantic and Elegant

For couples, maternity sessions, or anyone wanting something a little more refined, gardens, historic properties, and oak-lined avenues can create a classic and sophisticated look.

Natural and Relaxed

If your family loves being outdoors, exploring, and letting kids run free, parks and nature-focused locations often provide the perfect setting.

These locations tend to create playful, candid moments that feel genuine and carefree.

The truth is that there isn't a "best" location.

There's only the location that best tells your story.

Consider the Time of Year

The same location can look completely different depending on the season.

That's why timing plays a huge role in selecting the perfect backdrop.

Spring

Spring brings fresh greenery, blooming flowers, and vibrant colors.

Gardens and parks are often at their absolute best during this time of year.

Summer

Summer sessions often pair beautifully with beaches, marshes, and waterfront locations.

The longer evenings and lush greenery create gorgeous opportunities for sunset photography.

Fall

Fall tends to bring softer light, slightly cooler temperatures, and beautiful golden tones.

Many outdoor locations take on a warmer, more relaxed feel.

Winter

Winter offers some of the prettiest light of the entire year.

Without dense foliage, many locations feel more open and airy, and the cooler temperatures make sessions much more comfortable.

A location that feels perfect in April may not be the best fit in August—and that's completely normal.

Part of my job is helping you choose a location that's at its best during the season of your session.

Time of Day Matters More Than Most People Realize

This one often surprises people.

The exact same location can produce completely different photographs depending on when your session takes place.

That's because photography is all about light.

For most outdoor sessions, I schedule around the hour before sunset.

Photographers often call this "golden hour," and for good reason.

The light is softer, warmer, and more flattering than it is during the middle of the day.

Some locations work beautifully at sunset.

Others shine closer to sunrise.

Certain locations become crowded at specific times of day, while others offer more privacy and flexibility.

When helping clients choose a location, I'm not just thinking about the scenery. I'm also considering how the light interacts with that location at the time of your session.

Think About Your Family's Personality

The best location isn't always the most popular location.

Sometimes it's simply the location that allows you to be yourselves.

If you have energetic toddlers who love to run and explore, a wide-open park may be a better fit than a busy downtown area.

If your family loves spending time on the water, a beach or marsh setting might feel more authentic.

If you're celebrating a milestone and want something elegant and timeless, a historic Charleston backdrop may be exactly what you're looking for.

Your location should support the experience, not create stress.

The more comfortable you feel in the environment, the more natural your photos will be.

Don't Worry If You Have No Idea Where to Go

Honestly?

Most clients don't.

That's exactly why I've created a location guide filled with examples from some of my favorite locations throughout the Charleston area.

The guide allows you to browse photos from real session galleries and get a feel for what each location offers.

You'll be able to compare:

  • Beaches

  • Marsh locations

  • Parks

  • Oak-lined pathways

  • Downtown Charleston settings

  • Open fields

  • Waterfront views

  • And more

No, your photos won't look exactly like the examples.

And that's a good thing.

Those photos tell someone else's story.

Your images should reflect your family, your relationships, and your season of life.

The guide simply helps you visualize the possibilities and narrow down what feels most like you.

My Job Is to Help You Decide

If you're stuck between two locations, have no clue where to start, or simply want professional guidance, don't stress.

I've photographed families, couples, seniors, and newborns all over the Charleston area, and I'm happy to help you find the perfect fit.

When you book a session with me, you're not expected to have everything figured out.

That's what I'm here for.

Together, we'll choose a location that fits your vision, works beautifully during your chosen season, and creates the kind of images you'll love looking back on for years to come.

Because the perfect location isn't necessarily the prettiest one.

It's the one that helps tell your story.
